I saw an old rickshaw puller at a distance. He was sitting alone and waiting for passengers. I observed him for 10 mins or so, but he didn’t get a single ride. I immediately went to him and asked him, if there has been a reduction in the number of rides he is getting nowadays, due to coronavirus?
To which he replied – “Maalik, din ke 100-120 Rs kamaate the ab to vo bhi nahi mil rahe. Koi ghar se bahar nahi aa raha. Par hum gurdware mein khana kha lete hain apna pet bharne k liye. Bas sab log surakshit rahein” – he replied with a smile
When I tried giving him money, he denied stating – “Aapko kahin chorna hai to bataaiye, paise to mehnat se hi kamaaunga”. The man was indeed an inspiration for me. Even though his earnings were literally zero, he still wanted people to be safe. And neither did he accept the money which wasn’t the hard-earned money!!
Special thanks to all the gurudwaras and the entire sikh community for feeding people with food regardless of their religion or stature. Your efforts have only made this world a better place to live in.
