Hire people because of their skillsets not degrees?

Hire People

You are from a non – IIM college why should we give you this much CTC. – the recruiter questioned Are you hiring me for my degree or my skills? – my friend replied calmly.

Obviously your skills!!” – said the recruiter – Then please interview me for the skills I have.

I don’t have an IIM degree but that is possibly because I did not prepare well for the exam. Judging me just basis the degree isn’t right – he replied.

The result – my friend was selected by the recruiter, but he instead rejected the offer. When I asked him the reason for rejecting it, he replied – I want my boss to respect me for who I am and not because of the degree I hold. Do you think my friend did the right thing? Did the recruiter make a wrong statement? Should we judge a candidate for his/her educational degree while deciding the CTC? Or should we only give preference to Hire people for skills and past experience? Any Thoughts?
